This was an outstanding BBC drama shown in 1990 and seldom ,if ever, repeated.
The first episode was,in my opinion stolen by by the performance of Emily Aston as young Jess- interesting point to note is that she is the older sister of Sam Aston who plays Chesney in Coronation Street. You can see the likeness and obviously a new acting dynasty in the making!
It also stars Charlotte Coleman(Four Weddings & a Funeral), the actress who died tragically young in 2001.
But apart from spotting the names this is the BBC and British TV at its best.
I got these files from another site, where the source was given as DVD rip. However the three episodes had been merged together into two files. I have split them up into the original three 55minute episodes.

A mining town in the north of England, some time in the mid 1960s. Jess's 7 year-old life is filled with church going. Her stern adoptive mother and the women from the church group have been called to Morecambe to do 'the Lord's work'. They preach and play their musical instruments very loudly on the beach, while Jess plays in the sand.

9 years later, a 16 year-old Jess is spreading the word of God herself, cracks are beginning to show in her relationship with her mother. On market day, Jess accompanies her mother shopping, and meets Melanie for the first time. She is mesmerised from the start. The two teenage girls strike up a secret friendship. Melanie comes along to church and is 'baptised' thus making her a suitable friend for Jess. Soon their friendship blossoms into romance and they fall in love. They consummate their relationship while staying the night at Elsie's house, aware of the need to hide their relationship from the rest of the church.

Jess's mother suspects something is going on between the two girls, and matters come to a head when Pastor Finch denounces both of them in church. Melanie acquiesces immediately, asking forgiveness for her 'sin'. Jess escapes from the church, lead away by Miss Jewsbury. When Jess finally goes home, Pastor Finch, her mother and two other women from the church lay in wait for her, and perform an exorcism. They bind and gag Jess and pray over her for three days and three nights. Jess realises she must pretend to be 'cured' of her lesbianism if she is to get the church off her back.

A few months after the exorcism, Jess is still spreading the word of God. The church group are in Blackpool, administrating to lost souls who have now 'seen the light'. At one of the revivals, Jess meets Katy, who is obviously very smitten with her. It doesn't take much persuasion for Jess to realise her feelings for Katy, and before the church leaves Blackpool they have embarked on a relationship, kept secret from the rest of the church.

When Melanie turns up at the church for the Harvest Festival, she tells Jess' mother what is going on between Jess and Katy. This time around Jess is much stronger, unwilling to be dictated to again. She finally leaves home, finds a job and a place to stay with Cissy at the funeral home; life begins to feel normal. She next sees her mother and the rest of the church group at Elsie's funeral. She is still vilified by them for her 'sin against God'.

Jess decides finally to renounce her allegiance to the church and makes up her mind to get out of the small-minded town once and for all. She sits the entrance exams for Oxford University, winning a place. Just before she leaves for her new life, she visits her mother to patch things up. It is Christmas Eve and everyone is in a more forgiving spirit. Although her mother still will not accept Jess for who she is, they do not fight anymore.

Adapted by Jeanette Winterson from her own semi-autobiographical novel, Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit burst onto television screens in January 1990, in a blaze of pre-publicity. It inherited BBC2's Wednesday night 'serious drama' slot, previously occupied by the likes of Dennis Potter.

Today, more than 10 years later, one can't help wondering why so much was made of its lesbian aspect. The more powerful theme is the fight between the individual and a rigid and repressive society, manifested in Jess's (Charlotte Coleman) struggle to become her own person, rejecting the strict control of her mother (Geraldine McEwan) and of patriarchy, in the form of the church and Pastor Finch (Kenneth Cranham). She emerges to find a new world of possibilities - leaving home, her first proper job, a place at university. The individual in this case wins out over society, making this a piece of timeless drama just as relevant to modern audiences.

The drama uses conventions of televisual reality, grounding the drama in the real world, making it more accessible for the viewer and more easily appropriated by them. Without this convention the more fantastical elements of the drama might seem unbelievable and disrupt the viewer's identification with the storyline. Jess's mother certainly has quite a surreal world view, shared by the majority of the older inhabitants of Jess's world. This would work against the drama if it weren't for the characters' grounding in reality and the easily recognisable location of a working-class mining town.

For audiences that have grown up with lesbian characters in most of the main soap operas, the routine appearance of lesbian characters in ITV and BBC dramas, and Channel 4 pushing the boundaries of 'acceptable' British television with programmes like Queer as Folk (1999-2000), Oranges seems quite tame when seen today. But for its time, it was an innovative, brave, original and, to many, shocking depiction of teenage lesbian love. By the third episode of Oranges, as if to illustrate how far society had moved in its tolerance of minority groups, Jess not only accepts her sexuality but fully embraces it and the lifestyle she will soon lead, far from her small-minded community.
